The inspiration for this piece is a little hard to…
This is a far more ambitious version of the fish…
THE THOUGHT-FOX This is my third mobile inspired by Ted…
This Trout mobile sprung from the wonderful poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins “Pied Beauty”
GLORY be to God for dappled things—
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;
Landscape plotted and pieced—fold, fallow, and plough;
And áll trádes, their gear and tackle and trim.
All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
I don’t share Hopkins’s religion (or any other) but I can’t help sharing his delight at the play of light on various surfaces. I think he’s also marvelling at and celebrating the variety of our world.
